A Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was published in Medicine (Baltimore) in September 2023, which reported that in an analysis of studies completed with 471 participants, Acupuncture significantly improved outcomes in 95% of participants in 2 areas

  1. The rate of healing
  2.  Pain intensity

Their Conclusion? Acupuncture in TMJ Disorders significantly improved outcomes versus active controls and should be studied further in the future.

Chiropractic

As licensed Chiropractic Physicians, we have many treatment options to help with TMD for patients of any age.

  1. Jaw Joint Adjustments: Chiropractors can adjust the jaw joint to improve its movement, easing TMD pain.
  2. Upper Neck and Head: Chiropractors trained in Upper Cervical Techniques can adjust these areas to increase mobility and restore natural carriage of the head on the shoulders, aligning the jaw.
  3. Cervical Curvature: If you lose the natural curvature of the neck, you will likely experience Forward Head Posture (FHP). FHP can cause a malalignment of the jaw/TMJ which will put undue pressure on the TMJ and the disc. Our postural correction techniques can help relieve the pains and pressures caused by FHP and abnormal posture.
  4. Muscle Tension Relief: By addressing muscle tension near the jaw, chiropractors aim to alleviate discomfort.
  5. Fascial Adhesion Relief: Gently releasing adhesions and nodules in the supporting tissues of the face and jaw, chiropractors help the natural biomechanics of chewing, talking, and swallowing to happen in a more optimal way.
